Mississippi Man Charged with Threatening to Kill US Senator

Mississippi man who threatened to kill Sen. Roger Wicker has been denied bond by a federal judge and ordered to be detained until his case is presented to a grand jury.

Magistrate Judge Roy Percy denied bond for William Carl Sappington, citing his history of violent offenses and failure to abide by release conditions, as he faces charges of threatening to kill a US official.

FBI special agent Jason Nixon testified that Sappington went to the senator's cousin's residence on April 26, intending to kill Roger Wicker due to his past incident with law enforcement in 2014.

Sappington was arrested for aggravated assault of his brother in February 2014, and he attempted to escape before being bitten by a police dog. He was later taken to a trauma center in Memphis, Tennessee, for injuries sustained during the arrest.

Sappington objected to being taken to Tennessee after his arrest in 2014 and was released from prison in November for theft. Senator Wicker has held office since 2007.
